DON'T FORGET TO BOOK! Techpreneurship at The Mitre
August 14 2018, 6 pm for 6:30 pm

Founder of Heavy Chef, Fred Roed (1991G) reports: "Heavy Chef creates learning experiences for entrepreneurs. We offer events, workshops and tours featuring some of the most inspiring people on the planet. The name 'Heavy Chef' actually has nothing to do with cooking and comes from the saying never trust a skinny chef. In a world of talkers, Heavy Chef believe it’s the doers that are going to change it. Heavy Chef's aim is to inspire people to start things, and then empower them to succeed.

We have invited two of South Africa’s most dynamic tech entrepreneurs, Mark Forrester (1999G) and Annette Muller. Mark, who matriculated in 1999 from Bishops, is the founder of WooThemes and WooCommerce, which has been downloaded over 47 million times and powers almost a third of all the world’s e-commerce stores. Annette Muller is a sought-after international speaker, founder of Flexyforce, an innovative new start-up in the Future of Work sector, and has been recognised by Forbes International as one of the ‘top 10 female tech founders to watch In Africa’.

This event is for Bishops ODs, parents, pupils, and aspiring entrepreneurs who are curious about the brave new world of South African entrepreneurship."

BISHOPS ST ANDREWS DERBY

Wednesday 8th August: Rugby Talk at Woodlands and The Mitre
On the eve of the St Andrew’s and Bishops rugby matches, ClucasGray invites you to Michael Charton’s acclaimed story of the 1937 Springboks; their legendary tour of New Zealand; and the origins of rugby’s greatest rivalry.

The story weaves together the key characters of the tour into a compelling narrative which celebrates the amateur era of sport, and reminds one, through an emotional sense of nostalgia, what is truly important in life and legacy.

All proceeds to The Bishops Trust.

ODs Involved in Preserving Heritage
Jeremy Lawrence (1952F) and OD Vice-President, Les Masterson (1963O) are in the process of preserving a precious OD-relevant heritage grave site. The one grave is that of the very first OD President, Hon Mr Justice Sir Malcolm Searle, who died tragically in the Salt River Railway Accident of 9 June 1926 (another OD who died in that accident was Frank Molteno). The other grave is that of Philip Warham St Leger Searle, who was a grandson of Sir Malcolm Searle. Warham died after a short illness on 8th August 2005 at the age of 73. Many ODs will remember Warham's exciting contributions to the D.C. Magazine about his journeys on the RMS St Helena. Warham also generously gave much of his time to the OD office and compiled many valuable obituaries. These graves, located in St John's Cemetery, Wynberg are surrounded by other Searle family members as well as many other old family names with Bishops links. The OD Union would like to thank Jeremy and Les for their efforts in preserving our valuable heritage.

Bruce Jack's Latest Wine Venture
The South African Connoisseur recently interviewed former ODU Chairman, Bruce Jack (1987G): "Who in the South African wine industry doesn’t know the name Bruce Jack? You may know him as the winemaker who shot Flagstone to fame, or the man behind The Drift Estate in the Overberg. Most recently, and for the past 10 years, Bruce was the Group Head Winemaker for Accolade Wines—where he was able to use his talents making wine all over the world. Bruce now finds himself at the start of something new. And that is? Bruce Jack Wines. We sit down with Bruce to find out more..."

In 2017, Richard did a practical stint in History at Bishops and he is currently completing his second practical in English at the college. Richard is specialising in senior phase education.

ODU MENTORING
Nicky Bicket (1973F) reports: "The ODU Mentoring Programme continues to flourish. ODs are regularly putting themselves forward as mentors and monthly, younger ones are benefiting.
Sometimes the chemistry doesn't work and the mentor-mentee relationship doesn't progress. This is natural and when this happens, mentors and mentees are urged to write to me so I can remedy the situation.
The mentoring relationship on average lasts about three months, but some longer and some for only one meeting/conversation. Mentors are encouraged to stay in contact with their mentees and mentees shouldn't lose touch with their mentors. These are relationships which should be nurtured and cherished. It's what ODs do for each other.
Last month, I had a senior OD living in North America volunteer himself as a mentor saying, "At almost 80 I suppose it's a bit late, but I do have experience and insight".
I bet he does and such giving back to young ODs is truly appreciated and hopefully will soon he will be called into service.
So - to volunteer as a mentor or request a mentor, please click

QUOTE FOR THE WEEK

Taken from the 2005 Matric Leavers Year-book quote by Ian Haggie (2005F), who visited The Mitre this past week:
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."
~ Aristotle
