THE BISHOPS TRUST
The Bishops Trust - Shaping Leaders for a Transforming SocietyEvery boy can be a leader. Every boy can change his world and make a positive impact on society. This is what drives our mission and purpose: To inspire individuals and shape boys who will go out and use what they have learned here, in a world that desperately requires the skills, strength and values taught at Bishops.
The ever-increasing tuition fees play a contributing role in excluding many talented individuals from accessing Bishops. The Hamilton Mvelase Bursary Fund offers a Bishops education to talented boys who do not have the financial means to attend this excellent school.
We spoke to OD and former recipient of the Hamilton Mvelase Scholarship, Jabulani Sigege (1998F) about his journey following his years at Bishops.

Over the past few years the leaders of our Sustainability Committee, Chery Douglas and Gerry Noel, have done terrific work in moving the school to a position where we fully embrace the fact that we need to adopt a new approach to all matters related to the future sustainability of our planet." COMPETITION TIME! WIN TEST TICKETS! John Dobson (1985K), coach for the DHL Western Province rugby team, has kindly given the OD Union 4 tickets to the test match for the South Africa vs England game to be held at Newlands, Cape Town on the 23rd June 2018.
Two lucky ODs will win two tickets each if they complete one of the following competitions:
Competition 1: Promoting The Old Diocesan
ODs are encouraged to promote our very first edition of the OD specific publication - The Old Diocesan. To do this, we want you to send us a pic of yourself and the magazine in an interesting place or better yet, including other ODs as well. Congratulations to Paul Weich (1991B), who has taken the lead in competition 1 by showcasing his Old Diocesan Magazine at 37000 feet above the earth on a flight between Cape Town and Johannesburg during sun rise. Paul has really set the bar high! Nevertheless, ODs are encouraged to keep on submitting. For more exciting submissions, see HERE.
You will need to refer as many ODs to sign up to the new database (OD Connect) as possible and send us a photo of you and your candidates for inclusion in our newsletters.
Lourens van Zyl (2000K) has followed up his entry from last week by finding another OD who has yet to register on the new OD database. Lourens' entry this week took a bit more effort as it required a 03:30 wakeup call in order to catch Chris McInroy (1971G) before he set off the Unogwaja team.
Winners will be announced on Friday 8th June (Two weeks before the test match).

THE OD MENTORING PROGRAMME
The ODU Mentoring Programme continues to flourish. ODs are regularly putting themselves forward as mentors and monthly, younger ones are benefiting. Sometimes the chemistry doesn't work and the mentor-mentee relationship doesn't progress. This is natural and when this happens, mentors and mentees are urged to write to me so I can remedy the situation.
The mentoring relationship on average lasts about three months, but some longer and some for only one meeting/conversation. Mentors are encouraged to stay in contact with their mentees and mentees shouldn't lose touch with their mentors. These are relationships which should be nurtured and cherished. It's what ODs do for each other.
Last month, I had a senior OD living in North America volunteer himself as a mentor saying, "At almost 80 I suppose its a bit late, but I do have experience and insight". I bet he does and such giving back to young ODs is truly appreciated and hopefully will soon he will be called into service.
So - to volunteer as a mentor or request a mentor, please click HERE. If you would like to find out more about the mentoring programme, please contact Nicky at nbicket@katale.co.uk
OD UPDATES
Richard Smith (Staff) The OD Office is often asked how the Bishop's rugby coach, Richard Smith, has been recovering since his attack almost a year ago. We are glad to report that Richard's recovery is progressing well. Earlier this week, he managed to walk from his classroom to the Campground Shell garage and back, for the first time. An added bonus for reaching this milestone occurred when he bumped into his old friend, Gareth Wright, from Rondebosch Boys' High, who is currently the Stormers kicking coach.
VISITORS TO THE MITRE
Don Nelson (1957G) Congratulations to Don for the latest edition of his publication, A Newspaper History of South Africa, written by John Cameron-Dow. This is the 6th edition and the OD Union is very thankful for his kind donation to our collection. Don is helping the OD Union organise an OD book fair later this year - watch this space!
Ivor (1954F) and Cora Jardine
Ivor and Cora Jardine popped into The Mitre on Wednesday to drop off a letter to the OD Secretary.
SPORT
Bishops Connections at DHL Newlands Rugby It was remarkable to witness the amount of Bishops connections at last Saturday's Super XV Rugby match between the Stormers and the Lions. The cover of the Matchday Programme featured Sikhumbuzo Notshe in his 50th cap for the DHL Stormers. Notshe has come through the VUSA Rugby and Learning Programme, where Brendan Fogarty (Prep Staff) and Bishops Prep are very involved. Notshe later joined Wynberg High School and is on the bench for the Springboks in their test against Wales this weekend. Nick Groom scored a try for the Lions and is the son of Sharlene (Head of Pre-Prep) and Chris Groom (Prep Deputy Headmaster). Before the game, a moment of silence was held in remembrance of former physio Bruce McLaughlin, and the daughter of former Springbok player, Selborne Boome (1992O), Fiona. The OD Union would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Selborne and his family. Robbie Fleck (1993O) also expressed his condolences to Selborne in his coach's report in the match programme. Further connections included Dillyn Leyds (2010S) and Nizaam Carr (2009M) who represented the Stormers, Matthew Pearce (1971W) who did commentary on the match and the post-match interviews and Lael Rothenburg (Bishops Staff) and Andrew Bourne (2003O) who were spotted amongst the crowd.
Rowing: Attention USA ODs! Brad Smith (Current Staff): "We are taking a squad of 17 rowers and two coaches to Boston MA, USA where we will be partaking in the Head of the Charles regatta. We will be departing (roughly) on the 12 October and returning on the 21 October. The race will be on Saturday 20th October, we will have 4 boats competing. An eight, a coxed four, a double and a single. These boys will race in a timed event over the course of the Charles river over 3 miles (4,82KM). It is a massive event that is hosted over 3 days and see around 20 thousand athletes ascend the city and around 100 thousand spectators. The last time Bishops attended the race was in 2015 where they came an astounding 22nd out of 84 boats having started 82nd due to a seeding process." ODs residing in or around the Boston area are encouraged to support our boys at this prestigious event. Unogwaja Challenge
On Wednesday evening the unveiling of the Unogwaja team took place at the Southern Sun hotel, Waterfront. Present were ODs Keith Richardson (1968O) (Chairman of the Unogwaja Light Fund), Chris McInroy (1971G) (Organiser) and David Persse (1976F), whose daughter is taking part in this year's challenge. The next morning, at 04:20, Chris was seen setting off the team for the 8th year running. Chris has handed over the reins and this will be the first year that he watches the team as a spectator.

A LOOK BACK IN TIME
On This Day - 30th May 1937
On Wednesday, 81 years ago, the three bells on the East side of the Chapel were dedicated by Archbishop Phelps. They are named Fides, Spes and Caritas (Faith, Hope and Charity) and have the donor's initials on each bell (FIDES Frank Reid; SPES - Mrs Brian Peake; CARITAS - Mary Ella Birt, Alice Sophy birt & Roderick Harold Birt). Today the three bells still act as a call to start the day at Bishops (either Chapel service or House assembly) and they are the only form of bells that ring during the day at the College. In the June edition of the 1937 Diocesan College Magazine it is quoted by the Archbishop: "...The bells ought always to be thought of as the voice of God calling..."
