Visitors to The Mitre |
Today Thursday 06 February 2025, Mr John John Rawsthorne visited The Mitre to share some important Bishops sport history.
His father-in-law was Vernon Staegmann, who did Post Matric in 1950 as an U17, and who as a 16-year-old, set the school record for long jump which was broken last year (74 years later).
The record was set in February 1950. It was set at 8m 52cm and it was broken by Daniel von der Heyden (Grade 11, WH).
Vernon always said how he would have liked the record to be broken and religiously came to spectate at the annual sports event, but alas he passed on only a short while before this was to happen.
The record now stands at 8 m 54 cm.
Sitting talking at The Mitre, John traced Vernon's athlectic history, with the ODA Paul Murray. The history would be written up by John, for curating in the school archives.
They will be the memories of a 75 year old (John Rawsthorne) about his beloved late father-in-law, whom he talked so fondly about.
