Motor Enthusiast, Derek Stuart-Findlay (1964,0)

Writing a column every month for the last 15 years!

Derek Stuart-Findlay (1964,O) visited the Mitre in anticipation of the 60th reunion of his year group, the Class of 1964.  Whilst visiting we chatted about what he has been up to and his incredible column that he writes every month for The Crankhandle Chronicle about classic cars and the crazy people who drive them!

After leaving Bishops, Derek graduated from UCT with a BCom Degree and worked as an Executive with Old Mutual Properties that ran one of the largest commercial portfolios in South Africa. He was also President of SAPOA (SA Property Owners Association) in the nineties.

When he retired he began to write a column for The Crankhandle Chronicle that has a global readership.  His column has a special focus on South Africa and the motoring experiences of South Africans that is unique and different from all other motoring columns worldwide.

Derek mentioned that he uses as one of his reference sources, the collection of motoring books written by our very own Greg Mills (1979,O).  On the list of books he still wants to read about motoring adverture seekers, is the book written by the late grandmother of the van der Ploeg boys (Thomas (2008G) and Adam(2013G), Julia Albu.  In her book she journals her trip from Cape Town to Cairo in a small Toyota Conquest at the age of 80.

Should you want to explore the articles written by Derek and others, please see below:
