Over the weekend of 29 March 2025 Bishops and St Andrews will play each other for the 100th time.
They normally play each other each year, although in some years they did not.
The historic photograph above, from the school archives, reflects the players at a rugby encounter between ODs and OAs in Kimberley, Northern Cape, played on 02 May 1907. It shows that not just the schools historically play each other, but its Old Boys as well. It is great to know that ODs and OAs have been connecting with each other for over a hundred years. We still have OD and OA encounters today, when the circumstances permit. Last year at the 175 celebrations, OAs and ODs met on the Piley.
The match between the two schools has a great history. It dates back to 1896 when St Andrew’s came to play Bishops. However, the fixture gained momentum after the World War I, despite the travel difficulties of the time. Since 1921, the two schools have played against each other every year except during the World War II, and a few rare exceptions.
It is the third oldest match that Bishops plays against education establishments and the second oldest that St Andrew’s plays.
It really is one of the happiest rivalries.
Details of this year's event in Makhanda / Grahamstown, are published below. If you are in the area on 29 March please save the date and come and support the match.
We hope to see many ODs there!
We wish all the teams a great match!
