Class of 2013, OD Hockey Club |
On behalf of the ODU and the entire Bishops hockey community, we would like to thank Ryan Julius (2013K) for his contribution to South African hockey and, most importantly, to Bishops hockey over the years.
His journey, from the Astro at Bishops Diocesan College to representing South Africa in 86 outdoor International matches, has been incredibly inspiring. His skill, dedication, and leadership on the field has not only earned him numerous accolades, but has also made him a role model for so many young hockey players. Scoring nine international goals and competing at the highest level, including a stint in the Netherlands, speaks to his immense talent and commitment to the game.
We are particularly grateful for Ryan's ongoing involvement in Bishops hockey as the 1st XI coach.
On Instagram Ryan, fondly known as Juju, sent the following message to his friends and fans:
"For the past 10 years, playing for the South African Men's outdoor hockey team has been such a tremendous part of my life. It has provided me with countless friendships and memories. The lessons I have learnt have shaped me not only as a competitor but a human being.
This decision has not come lightly yet effortlessly at the same time. It is a bag of mixed emotions but ultimately I have come to the decision to retire from the outdoor national team setup. The journey to this moment has been enjoyable and incredibly rewarding - I for one, would like to depart the game on that note.
When entering the setup at the age of 19 years old, my goal was to leave the South African crest in a better position than I found it. I can clearly step away knowing that I have achieved my goal. After playing x2 Commonwealth Games, x2 World Cups, x3 African Cups and x2 Olympics, I exit this environment knowing that I have been blessed from above with the opportunity that many people can only dream of. I do not take that for granted at all.
In saying that, I want to thank the teammates that have stuck by my side from day one. You know who you are and I will miss the many moments we shared on and off the pitch.
To my wife, I know that it has not always been easy for you but your support through this journey and leading up to my decision to retire is something I will always truly appreciate. You are the real MVP. To my family, the people who are consistently in my corner, this one is for you. The endless games you have shown up and screamed my name from the stands, the amounts of tournaments you have traveled to, to support me, and the unconditional adoration you have for me. I thank you for your positive influence in my life. I consider myself immensely blessed.
To South African hockey fans, your encouragement every time I have put on the South African jersey gives me constant goosebumps and the urge to be 1% better. South Africa have a rare breed of supporters - whether it is rugby, soccer, netball, cricket or hockey. We as athletes feel the weight of the nation every time we sing the national anthem. Often people see it as a form of pressure, but I view it as a privilege. It has been an absolute privilege to don the South African jersey and to play for a country that is so steeped in sporting history.
Thank you for trusting me to wear the #19 Jersey.”

As he steps away from International outdoor hockey, we celebrate his remarkable career and look forward to seeing the impact he will continue to make at Central Hockey Club, Western Province, and, of course, right here at Bishops.
Ryan remains an exceptional ambassador for the game and we wish him all the best for 2025.
