Founders Day 2025 at the College started early on Friday, 7 March, with the traditional Founders Day Service. This was followed by the hilarious Avenue Mile run, involving pupils dressed up in all manner of costumes.
Next up was the epic inter-house Tug-of-War on the Range, where those cheering were as invested as those at the ends of the rope. After refreshments in their Houses, the boys took part in the inter-tutor group soccer matches.
Meanwhile, a group of six school-boy golfers and almost triple that number of ODs headed offsite to the Royal Cape Golf Club for some friendly golf. The golf was coordinated by Dean Cowling (2001F) and prizes were generously sponsored by a number of ODs.
Back on campus, basketball at the Mallett Centre, tennis at Founders Courts, soccer on the astro, shooting, and cricket matches filled the afternoon. The water polo events at the new pool featured enjoyable matchups between ODs and school polo boys. The ODs walked away with the water polo Simpson Cup, and once again, our shooters claimed the famous shooting trophy.
Cricket matches were well-attended, with some reunion games such as the OD 1991 and 1985 team games. Matches took place on the Avenue, Frank Reid, and Oaks and also on the Range and Sahara pitches. The previous evening, the school’s Flyer’s team played the 2023 OD cricketers under the lights. ODs won almost every game.
The day concluded with hockey matches on the Astro, culminating in a friendly face-off between the College’s 1st team and the ODs, with the ODs taking the win.
After the day's events, ODs gathered for a relaxed braai accompanied by ice-cold beers. This informal gathering allowed alumni to catch up, relive moments from the games, and humorously reflect on their current fitness levels compared to their school days.
Founders Day 2025 provided an ideal blend of sports, camaraderie, and competition. It seems to getter better every year!
Thank you to all the sportsmen who participated and especially the team captains who put together the teams. Well done all!
