Tristan Leyds (2015S) did his part to ensure the Blitzboks' triumphant return to the top of the Cape Town Sevens podium after nine years. With a dazzling blend of skill and determination, Leyds played a pivotal role in securing South Africa's 26-14 victory over France in the final, reaffirming the team's dominance in the rugby sevens world.
Tristan joined the Blitzboks in 2023 after transitioning from 15-a-side rugby, where he previously represented Western Province and the Stormers. He has since adapted impressively to the faster, more physically demanding world of sevens. A younger brother to seasoned Springbok and La Rochelle star Dillyn Leyds (2010S), Tristan has drawn inspiration from his brother while forging his own path. The two share a love for rugby, with Tristan emphasizing team over personal accolades.
This season, Leyds has demonstrated a knack for game-breaking creativity, providing vital support to Blitzboks stalwarts like Angelo Davids and JC Pretorius. His seamless integration into the squad was evident in Cape Town, where the Blitzboks maintained composure under pressure, outpacing formidable opponents such as Ireland and Argentina en route to the final.
For Leyds, the Cape Town win is a dream come true.
“Representing South Africa on home soil is something special,” he remarked.
His focus now shifts to sustaining this form as the Blitzboks prepare for their next challenges in the World Rugby Sevens Series.
It promises to be a thrilling season ahead for fans of South African rugby.
