Barrie Loudon Campbell MacKellar died on 9 August in Cape Town. He was 79.

His whole school career was with Bishops.  He entered Bishops Prep School in 1950 in Standard One, carrying on to College in Ogilvie House and through to matric in 1959.  He enjoyed school life and the many friends he made at school.

After matric, he spent a year at UCT before moving to a job with the construction firm of Murray and Stewart. However, he was more inclined to business and joined Barclays Bank, DCO to start a banking career.

Barrie had a steady rise through Barclays with various postings in the Peninsula, as a bank manager in Plumstead and then Morales Hoek in Lesotho for a couple of years. He returned to Cape Town and the administrative arm of the Bank to an appointment in the regional office in Sea Point. He retired in about 1995 when Barclays sold out their interests to First National Bank.

Barrie became interested in dinghy sailing at the UCT yacht club and later joined the Hermanus Yacht club. He was a regular and successful competitor in the Sprog class in Western Province and nationally. For many years he played an important role on the Yacht Club Committee organizing the sailing activities.

 Barrie married Marjory Raubenheimer in 1972 and they settled in Constantia from where he was able to continue his interest in yachting and sail training for juniors at Zeekoe Vlei. Amongst the youngsters he trained were his two children who both have enjoyed successful sailing careers.

He and Marjory were divorced in 1992.

In 1995 he married Anne Morphew and settled in Noordhoek. They spent 2001/02 working in Ireland, looking for adventure and exploring the country.  A few years later he and Anne went on a second working holiday in England.

More recently he used his organizational talent to play a large part in arranging the very successful 50year reunion of his 1959 matric year.  

Barrie was a very principled person, straightforward with a quiet sense of humour and a loyal commitment to his friends. He was dearly loved by his extended family and will be greatly missed. 

He is survived by his wife Anne, his son and his daughter and four grandchildren.
