Passing of friends |
Robin Richards (1955F) | 1938 -2019
Robin Richards was born in Cape Town in 1938. His early school years were spent at the Eagle School in the former Rhodesia, but Bishops had been the educational home of many of his family so Robin was sent to Bishops in 1952 and was in Founders until he matriculated in 1955. He made the long train journeys back and forth from Salisbury (now Harare). After leaving Bishops he joined the Royal Navy and then went to Worcester College, Oxford, graduating in geology.
After only a short period working for a Canadian mining company, he joined Dublin brewers Arthur Guinness, working there for many years before returning to South Africa.
He founded a Cape Town-based asset management company in 1986. While enjoying the challenges of the financial services industry, his concern was constantly for the individual clients, to give them the very best investment advice available for their circumstances.
Robin was always at heart a mountaineer. He climbed many of the major peaks of the European Alps and participated in five Himalayan expeditions.
He only very recently retired from the ski slopes and resigned himself to taking holidays at sea level. But the snow still drew him and his favourite cruise was to Spitzbergen, Greenland and the Arctic fiords.
His retirement in Hermanus was enhanced by the friendships shared on mountain walks and the intellectual stimulus of the Hermanus U3A.
He leaves his wife Deirdre, three children and six grandchildren.
