Passing of friends |
Class of 1973 |
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander "Zandy" Bicket (1973S), a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Zandy passed away unexpectedly in Pittsburgh on 2 December 2024, despite a significant decline in his health over recent months.
His twin brother, Nicky Bicket (1973F), had the privilege of spending the last ten days by his side - a meaningful time that underscored the deep bond the two shared.
Alexander Bicket was a respected Allegheny County Common Pleas Court judge. Originally from Scotland, he and Nicky were raised in South Africa, where they attended Bishops Diocesan College. After immigrating to the U.S. and earning his law degree from Duquesne University, Alexander embarked on a distinguished legal career. In 2011, Governor Tom Corbett appointed him to the Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, where he presided over high-profile cases with impartiality and compassion.
Zandy’s reputation for fairness and dedication to justice extended beyond the courtroom, making him a trusted figure in Pittsburgh's legal community. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was known for his kindness, humility, and commitment to those he served and mentored.
Anthony Gibson (1973S), a lifelong friend, shared this touching tribute:
At such a sad time, I do not have much to say that will bring comfort to you (his brother Nicky); Zandy’s wife, Susan, and his children, Ian and August—and us, his close and very old friends. It is just that… very sad.
Saying goodbye to a loved one, no matter their age, state of suffering, or circumstances, is just horrible. I met Zandy when I was six years old! That is 90% of my time on earth.
Zandy has always been there—loyal, funny, cynical, smart, and caring. He was also gifted, which meant he could excel at most things.
As you well know, Zandy did not have an ideal childhood, and this left its scars. To adapt the expression “hiding one’s light under a bushel,” I have often thought that Zandy “hid his happiness under a bushel.” It was always there, but he really battled to express it sometimes.
The world just feels so much lonelier than it did one day ago. I will miss him terribly.
Sending much love and comfort to you,
Anthony
Zandy’s passing is deeply felt by his wife, Susan, and his children, Ian and August. We send our deepest condolences to them during this difficult time.
