Passing of friends |
Class of 1951, Class of 1952 |
We received the following sad news from family members Julia Walker, Joanna Groves and Charles Groves, son of John Groves (1951G):
"I write to inform you that my father, John Groves, who was at Bishop's in the 1950s (Gray House) died peacefully in Rome on 28 October 2024 at the age of 91 (being two weeks short of his 92nd birthday). He will be sorely missed. "
A few months later we received the following description of John's career from his son, Charles that shows what a remarkable career he had:
After Bishops and UCT, he served as a naval ADC to the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, with whom his father had served in the PWE during the War. After marrying in Rome in 1959 and, subsequently, a brief spell at MECAS in Beirut, he moved to Europe where he worked, initially in Geneva, for Litton Industries, Schlumberger and latterly in Cape Town for the Banque de l'Indochine.
During the 1970s much of his time was spent in Francophone West Africa as a delegate of the European Commission under the Lome Convention, chiefly in Mali.
He resumed life in South Africa with his second wife in the second half of the 1990s.
We send our sincerest condolences to the family and close friends.
