Thomas Morse (1951G) passing

A dedicated family man, Thomas instilled strong values of hard work and discipline in his children, raising them to be self-sufficient and independent.

Thomas Morse (1951G), a beloved member of the community, was a day boy in Gray House during his time at Bishops. He built a distinguished career at Old Mutual, where he worked for 44 years, eventually heading up the HR Department. He retired at the age of 62 in the 1990s.

Thomas and his wife, Jean (née Parry), who passed away in 2015, raised four children. The family initially lived in Rosebank before moving to Bonniemile in Stellenbosch in the 1980s. Their children attended various schools: Russel, who was a boarder in Founders at Bishops; Bryn and Greg, who went to Rondebosch Boys' High School; and their youngest daughter, Katheryn, who matriculated from Rhenish. Tragically, Russel passed away in 2016 after being wheelchair-bound since a car accident at age 20.

A sports enthusiast, Thomas and two of his sons played rugby for the Villagers Rugby Club, where Thomas served as a lifelong Vice President. His love for sports extended to his role as Vice President of the Western Province Cricket Union, where he was well-respected and cherished.

Thomas had a deep love for horses, participating in the Ruiterpad Horse Marathon and owning many horses over the years. He continued riding until just a year ago. He also enjoyed sailing and fishing on the Langebaan Lagoon, spending cherished moments on his boat, 'The Ark,' which he bought in 1973.

A dedicated family man, Thomas instilled strong values of hard work and discipline in his children, raising them to be self-sufficient and independent. Despite his busy life, he always made time to watch his children’s rugby games, a testament to his commitment as a father.

Known for his sincerity, principled nature, and active lifestyle, Thomas was a people person who made everyone around him feel valued. He was meticulous, keeping lists, diaries, and journals throughout his life.

Thomas leaves behind his three remaining children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of hard work, discipline, and love.
