Here follows the obituary that was published in the Vancouver Sun newspaper.
Dr. Anthony (Tony) Law Townsend, beloved father, husband, friend, and physician (MB ChB FRCSC), following a cancer diagnosis in April, died peacefully at home with family at his side. He lived a full and accomplished life. He was a true gentleman, who will be remembered for his charm, enthusiasm, generosity, and zest for life.
Anthony studied medicine at the University of Cape Town and became a successful eye surgeon, retiring at age 78. At medical school, he met Denise Juretic, the love of his life, whom he married in 1967 in El Paso, Texas. They settled in Coquitlam, BC, in 1974.
An adventurous outdoorsman, he enjoyed activities like skydiving, mountain climbing, skiing, long distance running, hiking, cycling, and kayaking. He was also a skilled gardener at home and at his parish church of St. Laurence, a seasoned traveller who visited some 50 countries during his lifetime, and a dedicated volunteer with teams from Canada providing free medical care in Kenya, the Philippines, and Zambia.
Anthony was predeceased by his parents, Leonard Townsend and Brenda Law. He is survived by his wife, Denise; his children, Craig (Pajaree), Alexandra (Scott), and Justine (Gray); his siblings, Richard (Fenella) and Charles (Jenny); his grandchildren Alina and Thongmongkol, and numerous friends and extended family members, including the Deep Cove family.
Rest in peace, Anthony. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
