Christopher Luyendijk (2007K) passing

Christopher Luyendijk departed this world leaving a legacy of empathy, fellowship, and an impressive artistic catalogue. He was only 34 years old.

A close friend of Chris, James Emslie (2007B), shared with us this graceful tribute to his close friend who died on 23 January.

Chris had a prodigious musical talent, no doubt cultivated by his parents – Penny and Leo – both of whom taught at the Bishops music school, as Chris did too for a brief stint in his adult life. Indeed the Luyendijk family has left an indelible mark on generations of music students at Bishops. This propelled Chris to a remarkable career as a singer-songwriter, record producer, and guitarist, primarily based in London.

Chris's musical influences ranged from an early love of Queen and Pink Floyd, to Vivaldi, Grandaddy, Leonard Cohen, and countless others. He played with various bands on the UK festival circuit, including at Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, and Guilfest to name a few.

Chris also regularly collaborated with his wife, Amy Crankshaw – herself also an accomplished musician – notably to perform with the London City Orchestra and Guildhall New Music Society.

Chris had an infectious sense of humour and would never miss an opportunity for banter or a playful quip.

He was the most loyal friend you could ask for, and the first person to consult in a crisis. He will be sorely missed.

If anyone wishes to send flowers or would like a tangible way to show support at this time, the family has expressed that they would like to invite you to make a donation to Mind.

CLICK HERE TO DONATE to Mind , an organisation that is fighting to improve the UK's mental health system. This is an organisation that was close to his heart and Chris thought very highly of the work they did.

At the time of his death, Chris was writing and releasing music under the monikers 'Chris Willow' and 'Lava Kiss,' and this work is accessible on Spotify or Apple Music should you wish to listen.

Chris is survived by his beloved wife, Amy, his sister Emma, and his parents, Penny and Leo.

The ODU community and Bishops send their deepest condolences to Amy, Emma, Penny and Leo at this sad time.
