Passing of Gerald "Appie" Alanthwaite (1947G)

Courtesy, helpfulness, scholarship and good humour were qualities for which he was held in high esteem.

It is with deep sadness that we inform ODs of the passing of Mr Gerald Alanthwaite (1947G) in Hermanus on Monday, 22 January.

Gerald "Appie" Alanthwaite was born in Cape Town in 1929.  He was a boy at Bishops, entering the Prep in 1939 and leaving as a Post Matric student in 1947.  He was in Gray House.  He obtained a MA in Classics from UCT joining the staff of the Prep in 1952.

He made a meteoric rise as Housemaster in several houses, starting off as the second in charge of Stanmore and soon after replacing John Keble at Stanmore (1956).  After that he became Housemaster of Charlton House.

His extra-mural contributions were extensive, cutting across all areas, sport and drama.  He went from Bishops Prep to become the VP at Western Province Preparatory School in 1967 and after two years in that position, he came to the College (Bishops) where he was the Classics Master, until his retirement in December 1990.

From all who knew him and were taught by him, they would say,

He was a meticulous person who had high standards with an efficiency, accuracy and thoroughness that few could match.

According to historian Peter le Mesurier,

"(H)is courtesy, helpfulness, scholarship and good humour were other qualities for which he was held in high esteem".

Before his sad passing he lived with his daughter, Kathy (Mulock-Bentley), in Hermanus.

Our sincerest condolences go to Kathy and the extended family.
