Mr Graham Robertson, Teacher-in-charge of Sailing at Bishops, reports:
7 March 2019
The OD Sailing event in 2018 had to be cancelled due to too much wind and at the time, Olympian and OD, Roger Hudson (1996W) commented that perhaps we should use keelboats for the OD Sailing. This was done this year and so on Saturday 2 March Roger Hudson and Philip Baum (parent to Oscar in Grade 9) arranged two Cape31’s – a new comer to the sailing scene – for our sailing. The Cape31 is a sports yacht and as such the level of skill required to handle the boat has to be of the highest calibre. Roger runs a high performance sailing programme under the banner of Race Ahead and his team have use of a boat called Magic whilst ODs Roger, Davey James (1993B), Brevan Thompson (2011O) and Murray Wilcocks (2013K) joined Philip on his boat called Nemesis. The boys were broken up into four teams of four and those not sailing joined parents and siblings on OD, Andrew Collins’s (1985O) Challenger 33 to watch the proceedings and have a sail. The boys had a huge amount of fun on both boats and learnt a large amount. The youth team ie the Bishops boys won the event 5 races to 1.
A huge thanks to Roger, Philip and Andrew for allowing us use of their boats and also to Karen Slater and Patrick Lawson (1988G) for taking such incredible photos.
