Chairman of the OD Union, Martin Bey (1990B), outlines the following, proposed changes to the constituion:

There are two major changes brought about in the new constitution:

  1. It now legislates for a category of members being employees of Bishops (staff and support staff, without exception) who have served the school for 10 or more years.  Previously this was an ad hoc decision taken by the ODC from time to time.  It is intended to welcome all the qualifying members shortly.
  2. The period of time which a member of the committee will be elected is amended from 1 year to 3 years which will ensure better continuity.

Other than the above there have been a number of stylistic, semantic and minor changes which we believe makes the Constitution more relevant and applicable.

The one issue that requires your attention is the PBO status.  We have been assured by SARS that the PBO Status of the ODU will be reconfirmed.  We are waiting final approval and confirmation.  This is an ongoing slow process which we are attempting to expedite.  As and when the PBO status is clarified, it is intended to update the Constitution to reflect that.

Next steps:

We invite further comment on the proposed Constitution for a period of 60 days, and thereafter a final version will be confirmed by the OD Committee and will ultimately be put to the vote at a specially convened SGM or at next years’ AGM.
