ODs Around the World |
Each term several ODs meet at a local eatery in Cape Town, to socialize.
This is The Symposium, an OD society founded in 2013 by the ODA Paul Murray and Brian Robertson (1979G) and Dugald Roberston (2010F).
It came about as a result of John Hawinkels (2010O) in conversation with Dugald Robertson (2010F) mentioning the need for a society where ODs could meet to discuss issues of the day.
The meetings take the form of enjoying a meal together, but also a talk is given each time by one of the ODs.
This time it was the turn of Dr WP van Zyl (1997K) who spoke on the the topic of the Italian Prisoners of War of the WWII; and how the lives of people are affected due to movement across borders. The conversation included our own stories: from where, and when did our forebears come to South Africa?
The place we meet is normally chosen because of its excellent fare and it's hard to beat Pizza Connection in Woodstock for its Roma pizzas.
The most recent meeting was attended by - from L to R in the photograph - Viljoen van Heerden (2011M); Andrew Russell (1982G); Dr WP van Zyl (1997K); Mark van Hoogstraten (1987F); Paul Murray (Staff 1991 - & ODA); Khelan Dheda (2021B) and Gustav Loubser (2009B).
The Hon Secretary of The Symposium is Viljoen van Heerden.
