Thomas van Poucke (1999O) , branch secretary in Mauritius, shares news from out in the middle of the Indian Ocean (Mauritius).
Following the success of the Alma Mater Golf Day held at Mont Choisy Golf Club in the North of Mauritius earlier in the year, where we had twelve different Old Boys' teams representing nine different schools, we then decided to have our own gathering.
Four Rondebosch Old Boys, all having matriculated from the same year (2001) decided to host a golf outing. It was decided the right thing to do would be to challenge the chaps educated on the other side of Sandown Road and we managed to scramble together a motley crew of three ODs and a Kearsney Old Boy (whose cousins went to Bishops). The ODs represented, being Pierre Joubert (1983F), Daniel Romburgh (1999B) and Thomas Van Poucke (1999O). Our cornerstone David Axten (1985S) who was unavailable due to travel commitments, was sorely missed.
Conditions were tough with a South Easterly breeze charging like the light brigade across the Indian Ocean Island, offering no excuse to the resolute Capetonians who were reminded of their golfing past in the fairest Cape.
The game was held in great spirits and Rondebosch came out on top in a tightly fought affair. The 19th hole was full of camaraderie and reminiscent of days past. It was decided that this is certainly something we will continue to do on a periodic basis.
In other news, the Africa Sevens rugby tournament is being played in Mauritius over the weekends of the 29th/30th of June and 6th/7th of July. The Blitzboks are attending which is a great coup for the tournament. We are unsure who the squad consists of, but hopefully we will get to watch fellow ODs Tristan Leyds (2015S) and James Murphy (2013F) in action on 'the Rock' in the coming weeks.
Thomas sends his best wishes, and we are pleased to receive this news to share with ODs.
