ODs Around the World |
The UK Branch of the ODU recently celebrated its annual black-tie dinner in London. This tradition, held for the past ten years (with a brief hiatus due to the pandemic), continues to be a resounding success.
The event, hosted at the prestigious Carlton Club in Mayfair, attracted ODs from around the world, including Switzerland, Portugal, South Africa, Scotland, and Hong Kong. The evening commenced with a pre-dinner reception in The Morning Room, where attendees enjoyed Simonsig Brut, Gayda wines, and OD-brewed Cobru beer.
A highlight of the evening was the Toast to Bishops, delivered by the youngest OD present, Matthew Perrott (2016O). His heartfelt ode celebrated the spirit of Bishops.
This year, in honor of the invited speaker, the Grace was eloquently delivered in Welsh. A solemn moment followed when the guests stood in silence to commemorate four recently departed ODs: Raymond Ackerman (1948S), Julian Ogilvie Thompson (1951F), Richard Duck (1964G), and Nick Koster (2007F).
Guiding the evening's proceedings was Nick Heesom (1961W), the most senior OD in attendance, who warmly welcomed ODs and guests, including the President and Secretary of the Old Haileyburian Society with whom the UK branch has had a valued and long-standing relationship.
Skilled MC, Choppy Bands (1990K), maintained control over the gathering with his characteristic blend of gentle authority.
Adrian Kritzinger (2006F) introduced the speaker and guest of honour, Nigel Owens. The renowned international rugby referee delivered a captivating speech. Owens shared his journey from a schoolboy rugby player to becoming one of the world's best referees. He sprinkled his talk with amusing anecdotes, insights into the best and worst players to referee, and his personal experiences, including his courageous decision to come out as gay. Owens received a standing ovation from the ODs and a traditional ODU rugby jersey that would keep him warm on his farm in West Wales.
The dinner was marked by camaraderie and a strong sense of the Bishops spirit. It ended with the traditional afterparty, where attendees continued the celebration late into the night.
With the event's popularity on the rise, there's a dilemma for future years: Where will they accommodate the growing demand? Regardless of the venue, one thing is clear—this annual dinner is a cherished tradition that brings ODs together for an unforgettable night.
