Three ODs from Auckland NZ recently met at Tuaranga - pictured from left to right: Mike Currey (1976G), Gavin Lister (1974G) and Iain Slight (1975W).

Mike Currey shared some interesting Bishops History, of ODs connecting & writes as follows:

"There is a bit of history to the photo as it is exactly 60 years since the three of us started at the Pre-prep. We were only the second intake, with Miss Mosely as our teacher. Miss van der Plank was our teacher the following year in Sub B.

Interestingly, there were three staff sons that year. Both Gavin’s parents, Joe and Myrtle, taught at the college for many years as did my father, Charles (aka Pickles). The other staff son in our class was James Gardener, whose father, John, served Bishops faithfully, returning as head master after spending some time as Headmaster at Kingswood in Makhanda."

Mike wrote in again and adds the following: "There was another interesting fact about the pre-prep. My mother, Anne, was the Sub A teacher for the very first pre-prep class – back in 1962. She taught Gavin’s elder brother, Anthony in that year. She didn’t teach Gavin, Ian or me in 1963, as she was off on maternity leave."

By all accounts the ODs spent a very enjoyable evening together, recalling numerous names and events from yesteryear and have already set a date for another mini-reunion.

Note from Paul Murray the OD Ambassador:

I worked at Bishops with John Gardener (1947G) who taught Latin - he was the Principal that appointed me; Mr Currey was my V-P; and both Joe and Myrtle were also there, Joe teaching English and Myrtle, Afrikaans.  The Late Ant Lister and I both worked at the NSC as Moderator and Chief marker for the subject History.

Please send in your recollections or stories about ODs connecting, to Paul Murray [email protected]

We are working hard to connect ODs around the world with each other and would appreciate hearing their stories.
