Keith Richardson (1968O) launched his maiden book Before the wax melts - Musings of a South African Headmaster in a packed Clegg Hall at Wynberg Boys' High School on Tuesday 21 August 2018.
The format of the evening included Keith being interviewed in a humorous, reflective, and very sincere manner by Leap Schools Executive Director and Wynberg Old Boy John Gilmour.
Keith revealed that the title relates to the classic Greek legend of 'The fall of Icarus', which sparked the idiom "don't fly too close to the sun".
He further explained that whilst the book contains many of his stories and experiences as Headmaster of Wynberg Boy's High, readers will be able to relate to characters, personalities, and incidences from their own schooling background. He recommends the book for Mothers, to understand what goes on a young boy's mind. Other points highlighted includes the importance for boys to reflect on their actions if they have done something wrong, and for adults to have the patience to allow that insight; the stories behind Old Boys who died fighting in the World Wars, and the fact that they were real people, and not just a name on a board or a face in a photograph; and the importance of teachers to have enough emotional intelligence to mentor young boys through school.
After the interview Keith received a standing ovation from the large crowd - a testament of respect which this OD has earned through many years of sacrifice and dedication in shaping the lives of young men.
