Nestled in the quiet, sprawling plains of the Karoo, Roscan Sanctum stands as a beacon of hope and healing. Founded by Duncan Briggs (1983F) and his wife, Rosemary, this sanctuary has evolved over 11 years into more than just a refuge—it’s a community, a family, and, above all, a home.
What began as a patch of dusty farmland has transformed into a sanctuary for 17 previously forgotten individuals and a motley crew of 150 animals, including dogs, potbellied pigs, sheep, and various farm birds. Roscan Sanctum has always been a hive of love and laughter—a place where people and animals alike find safety and dignity. Here, dogs sleep on couches, and residents work to improve the place every day, creating a space brimming with small yet vital changes.
Since formally establishing Roscan Sanctum for Humans in 2017, Duncan and Rosemary have welcomed 257 people to this haven, each finding not just shelter, but support to rebuild their lives. Kids have found their way into school, while adults learn vital skills through a hands-on approach that emphasizes independence and resilience. Self-sufficiency, a core tenet of Roscan’s mission, is instilled through a variety of training programs.
Residents acquire skills in carpentry, animal husbandry, farming, and interpersonal relationships, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to the sanctuary and build confidence for future endeavors. The handcrafted furniture, grown crops, and animal care are not just activities—they’re lifelines, providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment to those who have previously known only hardship.
With a growing need for better facilities to accommodate their expanding community, Roscan Sanctum continues to seek support to improve living conditions and increase housing capacity. Duncan and Rosemary envision a future where the sanctuary’s impact stretches even further, supporting individuals and communities in the Cape Town region and beyond.
In the quiet of Matroosberg Stasie, Roscan Sanctum shines as a remarkable testament to the power of kindness, resilience, and hope.
