Vassilis Sgoutas was elected Honorary President of the UIA (International Union of Architects) in recognition of his outstanding service to the Union. President of the UIA from 1999 to 2002, a prize bearing his name was created in 2007 to honour architects who have made a contribution to improving living conditions for populations living below the poverty line. The UIA Extraordinary General Assembly held on 11 June 2019 in Baku (Azerbaijan) thanked Vassilis Sgoutas for his years of dedication and service to the Union by conferring the title of honorary president for life.
Sgoutas graduated from Cape Town University in South Africa after which he established his own office in Athens in 1961. His works comprise several large scale projects in Greece and the Middle East, including public buildings, auditoria, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, landscaping and urban design.
