Congratulations to Colin for receiving the CEO’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Engineering Industry!
(Adapted from the award speech given at the ceremony):
This award recognizes an individual who has been influential and has contributed to making a visible difference in the metals and engineering sector during his or her career.
Colin has been active in influencing and promoting the interest of the Cape Engineers and Founders’ Association and SEIFSA over the last forty years.
Until recently the Executive Director of the Cape Engineers and Founders’ Association, he has been active in promoting the interests of his constituency in the broader economy, but particularly in the metals and engineering industries.
Born in Cape Town in 1946, he did his schooling at Bishops, where generations of the Boyes family have been educated. He subsequently studied at the Cape Technical College, where he qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators.
His relationship with SEIFSA began in 1975 when he joined the Cape Chamber of Industries, which was formed in 1904 to administer the interests of employers in manufacturing industries, including engineering.
The Cape Chamber of Industries formed a secretariat which led to metals and engineering industries employers establishing the Cape Engineers and Founders’ Association in 1920. That Association became a founder member of the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (SEIFSA) in 1943.
During his long and illustrious career with the Cape Engineers and Founders Association, Colin was actively involved in championing the interests of his constituency and the broader metals and engineering industries at both regional and national levels. He also played an important role in safeguarding the social security benefits of the industry’s employees by diligently serving as a Trustee, Member and Chairperson of the Metals and Engineering Industries Pension and Provident Funds, Investment Committees and related structures. Today the Industry Funds are counted as one of the biggest funds in the country, with assets in excess of R100 billion.
His retirement from the Cape Engineers and Founders’ Association is a loss not only to the Association, but also to the industry as a whole.
