The Order of Simon of Cyrene takes its inspiration from the principle of

"bearing one another's burdens."

Being admitted to the order within the Anglican Church is rare, and considered the highest honour that can be bestowed upon laity. Richard and his wife Sue have received this accolade.  They truly are most deserving.

Richard Cock's lifelong dedication to spreading a love of music in South Africa has been widely recognised and celebrated. In various roles, including choral trainer, conductor, and Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra, his contributions to the musical landscape have been significant. The Anglican Church of Southern Africa is honored to join other institutions in acknowledging his substantial contributions to church music.

Educated at Bishops, and later at the University of Cape Town College of Music, Richard earned a scholarship to the Royal School of Church Music in the United Kingdom. Following his studies there and the completion of his degree, he was appointed Director of Music at the Cathedral Choir School and Assistant Organist at Chichester Cathedral. Additionally, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists.

Upon returning to South Africa, Richard gained renown for his extensive service to music and became a legendary figure in the realm of church music. His notable role as Organist and Director of Music at the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin in Johannesburg further solidified his place in the musical community. In recognition of his contributions, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music.

The Synod of Bishops was therefore very pleased and privileged to admit Richard Cock to the Order of Simon of Cyrene.
