The following will represent the OD's vs SACS in the Old Quad Shield outing at Westlake on Thursday 14 November. For those who are unfamiliar with the format - because Bishops and Rondebosch old boys play each other every year for the Walker Cup, the two schools alternate playing against SACS & Wynberg in the OQ. We played Wynberg 2 years ago (the last event), whilst Bosch played SACS. This year it is reversed. However, we are effectively all playing against each other, as the scoring is as follows:

  1. Betterball Stableford points, based on current Handicap Indexes and the tee-box selected on the day. All players to check their playing h/caps for the day, according to the charts on display at Westlake GC.
  2. Each school's points from their 12 pairs will be totalled-up, and the winners of the shield will be the school with the most points, so every point counts! No “gimmes”!

The scores for the last event in 2022 were:

  1. Wynberg : 474
  2. Bishops: 467
  3. Rondebosch: 448
  4. SACS: 435

In 2017, when SACS did not take part, the scores were:

  1. Bishops: 514
  2. Wynberg: 510
  3. Rondebosch: 509

In 2014, Bishops & Wynberg tied 1st on 487 points each

These figures tell you how close results can be, and how important every point is! It is different from the way the Walker Cup works, which is based on matches won or lost (or halved). In this year's WC, Bishops & Bosch were tied on 16 matches each! Only the 2nd time that that has happened in 41 years!

2024 Team Members (in no particular order) are:

  1. John Smuts (Rondebosch GC) & John Van Ryneveld (Westlake)
  2. Dean Cowling (Royal Cape) &
  3. Rob Carlyle (Malmesbury) & Murray Carlyle (Cath Peak – KZN)
  4. Arnold Vermaak (Clovelly) &
  5. Mike Olds (KDM) & Laurie Gardener (KDM)
  6. Marlon Parring (Atlantic Beach) & Frikkie De Villiers (Langebaan)
  7. Doug McFadyen (KDM) & Derek Lloyd (Westlake)
  8. Simon Koch (Royal Cape) & Richard Day (Clovelly)
  9. George Golding (Clovelly) & Michael Furter (Royal Cape)
  10. Gwyn Phillips (Clovelly) & Roger Carter (Strand)
  11. James Henkes (Club?) & David Cumming (club?)
  12. James Milne (KDM) & David Nel (club?)
  13. Phil Kilpin (TWK) & Alastair Smith (club?)

Most players were selected based on their performances in recent OD golf events. When I was short of players after the realisation that the event clashed with Royal Cape's Anniversary Week, I extended the net wider. Two players above (Dean & Arnold) have now lost their partners, so I will pair them together. This will give us our 12 pairs. I am sure there will be others keen to play, if we have any late withdrawals.
