Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor

A man of many facets and many talents.
Frank 'Sam' Butler, teacher and soldier
Frank 'Sam' Butler, teacher and soldier

Read more about the talented Sam Butler, whose name was synonymous with art at Bishops.  He was the school’s art master from 1938 to 1969.  His career and life was interrupted by war.

During this gap of several years he became a master in art of a different kind ... the gorilla art of camouflage!

Read the fascinating full story of Sam’s war experience, by Mac Bisset (1960G), in Issue 9 of The Old Diocesan.  And while you are there, meet the classic Bishops art masters of the 19th century on p64.

An interesting fact:

Sam Butler worked at Bishops for 31 years!  A stint only surpassed by the recently retired Peter Hyslop.
