Philip Robert James Grinham (at Bishops from 1949 to 1953) took First Prize in the Diocesan College Photographic Society for his photograph of 'The Chapel'. This was in 1953.
In the photograph, the baldachin gets pride of place, as it stands majestically in the apse. The word baldacchino is the Italian adjective (baldacco) for a canopy (linked to the tapestries made at Bagdad/Baghdad). The word canopy is from the Greek, meaning a mosquito net or such-like covering.
The baldachin was regarded as essential for the interior design of the Chapel, so much so that the architects Walgate & Elsworth and the QSs Babbs & Labdon 'presented it to Bishops to prevent its being postponed or omitted if funds did not allow for it'. Funds were subsequently raised to pay for it.
