Elegance, friendship, and a spirit of celebration marked the prestigious OD Dinner on Wednesday, 5 March 2025. Held at Kelvin Grove, the event began on the lawns as the sun set, transitioning gracefully indoors beneath sparkling chandeliers in a beautifully decorated banquet hall. Once again, the event was a memorable gathering across many generations.
The formal program commenced just after 19:00 with a warm welcome from the charismatic Master of Ceremonies, Brandon de Kock (1986K), who immediately set an inviting and lively tone. Father Monwabisi Peter delivered an opening blessing, and this was followed by a loyal toast by Judge Craig Howie (1956G), and Chris Haw’s (1999F) message from the school and council, and special toast to Bishops.
Guests enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner and some beautiful OD wines (Oak Valley Sounds of Silence Pinot Noir and Beau Constantia Pas de Nom White 2024). The evening's highlight was guest speaker Oscar Chalupsky, an internationally renowned surf-ski champion whose inspiring story of resilience had everyone captivated throughout. Chalupsky shared profound insights into overcoming adversity and achieving greatness, profoundly resonating with many attendees who applauded his compelling narrative and gave him a standing ovation.
An energetic auction, expertly run by Andrew Koch (and Old SACS boy), followed dessert, featuring notable items generously donated and organised by Duncan Cruickshank (1985G) of DHL Stormers, Bruce Jack (1987G) Wines, Constantia Glen (Gus Allen (1982F), and Shannon Wines (James Downes (1990W), eliciting vibrant excitement and generous participation from guests. ODU President, David Carter (1958G), then made the exciting announcement of the new OD Union Committee (ODC) for 2025 and 2026, drawing enthusiastic applause. The latest edition (Issue 11) of "The Old Diocesan" publication awaited attendees at each table. For those of you who would like to see the online version of that beautiful publication CLICK HERE.
The formalities ended with tea and coffee, more wines and even more laughs.
We would like to extend our special thanks to the dedicated organisers Richard Neville (1995S), Steve Ciolli (1993W) and ODU Events Organiser, Dedry Weich, with additional recognition for Nasriyah Bailey’s beautiful floral arrangements and Nicole Little's photographic documentation of the evening, and the beautifully laser-cut table numbers generously gifted to us by Warwick Smith-Chandler (1975S).
