A Windy Farewell at the Old Quad Golf Challenge

Our ever-adventurous organiser, John Smuts, has been off exploring the world! But as they say, good things are worth the wait, and last year's Old Quad Golf Challenge deserves to be remembered.

OD Golf Club

John Smuts (1969S) writes his final report before handing over the reigns:

The annual Old Quad Golf Challenge took place at Westlake Golf Club on Thursday, 14 November 2024, with golfers battling not just each other, but also some seriously gusty conditions. The final standings were:

  • Wynberg
  • SACS
  • Bishops
  • Rondebosch

Westlake has been the traditional venue for this event, largely thanks to Wynberg’s long-time organiser, Jeff Sternslow, who was a proud member of the club—along with many fellow Wynberg Old Boys. This "home-ground advantage" may have played a role over the years, and in a fitting turn of events, Wynberg once again claimed the top spot. However, this year’s victory carried a special significance.

Jeff Sternslow, who had tirelessly organised the Old Quad for years, had planned to step down, with former Wynberg Headmaster Jan de Waal set to take over. Tragically, Jeff fell ill a couple of months before the event and passed away just days before the tournament. His loss was deeply felt by all, and in his honour, players wore black ribbons as a tribute to the man who had contributed so much to the event.

This tournament also marked a farewell of a different kind. It was my final year organising OD golf events, and I had been on the lookout for a successor. Fortunately, Dean Cowling (2001F), vice-captain (and soon-to-be captain) of Royal Cape Golf Club, has stepped up to take the reins. Dean will now oversee both the Walker Cup (against Rondebosch Old Boys) and the Old Quad Golf Challenge. A huge thank you to him for taking on this responsibility!

I’ve had the privilege of playing in the Walker Cup for over 40 years and the Old Quad since its inception. While I plan to continue playing in both, I’m relieved to be passing on the organisational duties after seven years. It’s been a rewarding experience, but also a demanding one—both in preparation and on the day itself.

Speaking of the Walker Cup, 2024 saw an evenly matched contest, ending in a 16-all draw. Here’s hoping Dean can steer the OD team to victory in both events next year!

To all the golfers who participated - thank you for making the 2024 Old Quad such a special and memorable occasion. See you on the fairways in 2025!
