Class of 1990

Congratuations to current Chairman, Martin Bey (1990B), on being recognised in the 2025 edition of The Best Lawyers in South Africa.

What sets Best Lawyers apart is its Purely Peer Review™ methodology, a rigorous process where practicing lawyers nominate and evaluate their peers. This ensures that recognition is based solely on professional expertise and reputation within the legal community, not on self-promotion or external influences.

The rankings are published online and featured in respected local, regional, and national publications, making them accessible to a wide audience. By always setting a high standard for recognition, Best Lawyers has become a trusted resource for clients looking for excellence in the legal profession. To be featured is a feather in Martin's cap.

Short Bio

After matriculating at Bishops, Martin studied at UCT.  He completed articles in July 1997, and was employed as an associate at CK Friedlander Shandling Volks.  In 2001 he became a director and partner. The firm merged with STBB in 2012 and Martin joined STBB as an equity director where he also headed up the Commercial and Property Litigation Department in Cape Town.  He served on the executive committee of STBB and has over 25 years of experience as a practicing attorney.

Martin has carved out an impressive career as a legal practitioner, specialising in complex areas such as construction disputes, commercial litigation, and admiralty and maritime law. With extensive expertise in construction law, he has represented contractors, employers, and principal agents in disputes under JBCC Building Agreements, FIDIC agreements, and bespoke contracts. He is also a trusted advisor in property and planning law, offering guidance on zoning, heritage, and environmental issues.

Martin's legal acumen extends to municipal and administrative law, where he has advised municipal entities on the Municipal Finance Management Act, asset transfers, and public finance regulations. His experience spans High Court and Appeal Court litigation, as well as acting as legal counsel and arbitrator in arbitrations.

Beyond his professional work, Martin has been a keen rugby player and coach. He played for the UCT 1st XV from 1994 to 1999 and represented the WP President’s rugby team in 1998 and 1999. He served on the UCT RFC executive committee and later coached the UCT U20A2 and 2nd XV teams, achieving a league win in 2005. He has also been a member of the Olympic Sports Club.

Well done, Martin, we wish you continued success in all spheres of your life!
